JOY IN YOUR CIRCUMSTANCES: Philippians 1:12-30
Promise: The Bible not only tells us to have joy in our circumstances… it shows us how!
Principle: Joy is not found in a single event or feeling. Joy is found in a God given process of life.
What is joy? Webster: the emotion evoked by well-being, success, or good fortune or by the prospect of possessing what one desires.
The secret to joy in your circumstances: change your ___DESIRES___
WHEN OUR DESIRES LINE UP WITH GOD’S DESIRES WE WILL EXPERIENCE JOY
CHANGE THE FOCUS OF WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING AT
I. LOOK BEYOND THE ___CIRCUMSTANCES__ TO SEE THE _RESULTS__ (Phil. 1:12-14)
Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. James 1:2-3
Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance, perseverance, character, and character, hope.” Romans 5:3-4
Paul saw two results of his chains:
1. __EVANGELISM_____ – The Praetorian Guard heard
2. __ENCOURAGEMENT_ – Believers were bolder
DON’T LOOK AT THE CIRCUMSTANCES OR THE OUTCOME. LOOK AT GOD!
GOD WILL NOT KEEP US FROM THE FIRE. BUT, HE WILL WALK WITH US THROUGH THE FIRE.
PEOPLE ARE WATCHING TO SEE HOW YOU HANDLE BEING IN THE FIRE.
II. LOOK BEYOND THE __PEOPLE____ TO SEE THE _PRIORITIES__ (Phil. 1:15-19)
How do you handle people who “make things worse?”
1. Don’t forget those who ____MAKE THINGS BETTER___
2. Remember __THOSE WHO ENCOURAGE YOU_____
III. LOOK BEYOND THE __TEMPORARY___ TO SEE THE _ETERNAL___ (Phil. 1:20-26)
For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. 2 Corinthians 4:17-18
For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. Philippians 1:21
How do I apply this principle in my life?
1. A lifetime commitment to ___MINISTRY – SERVING OTHERS_
2. A desire to be with __JESUS_____
3. An unselfish love for _____OTHERS________
1. Can I face life with a purpose?
2. Can I face death with confidence?
IV. LOOK BEYOND THE __BAD NEWS_____ TO SEE THE ___GOOD NEWS___ (Phil. 1:27-30)
The Good News is more than a message, it is a ___LIFESTYLE___
HOW TO LIVE THE GOOD NEWS
God’s Challenge My Decision
“Stand firm in one Spirit” I will continue to TRUST
“Contend for the faith” I will not concede to CRITICISM
“Face those who oppose” I will not be controlled by FEAR
“Granted to suffer” I will not be confused by SUFFERING
