It’s never too early to be discipled. In fact, discipleship begins with our children.

Last year, we brought Sunday School back to our church. Since then, we’ve watched it grow and that growth is something worth celebrating.

Many modern churches have moved away from Sunday School and focused almost entirely on the worship service. Worship is essential, but Sunday School provides something different: dedicated time for teaching, discussion, questions, relationships, and intentional discipleship.

For many of us, Sunday School is where our own journey of learning about God began. It was where we first heard the stories of the Bible, learned about people like Noah, Moses, David, Esther, Daniel, and Ruth, and began to understand what it means to trust and follow God.

For children today, Sunday School can provide that same foundation. It’s where they learn the characters and stories of Scripture. It’s where they begin memorizing God’s Word and learning the songs of faith. It’s where a Bible lesson might be reinforced with a craft, a coloring page, or a snack. Those things may seem simple, but they are planting seeds. It’s never too early to teach a child about Jesus. It’s never too early to begin discipleship.

And discipleship doesn’t stop when we become adults. Sunday School gives adults a place to continue growing in their faith—to open God’s Word together, ask questions, learn from one another, encourage one another, and sometimes challenge one another.

We need one another. Iron sharpens iron. Sunday School is an important part of that process. It doesn’t replace the Sunday worship service, and the Sunday worship service doesn’t replace Sunday School. They work together. Sunday School gives us time to learn, discuss, ask questions, and grow. Sunday worship gives us time to gather as the body of Christ, worship together, hear God’s Word proclaimed, pray, and encourage one another. Both are important. Both have a purpose. Both are part of helping us become the disciples Christ has called us to be.

We are grateful that our Sunday School, which we restarted last year, continues to grow. But our goal isn’t simply to have full classrooms. Our goal is discipleship. We want to see children who know God’s Word and love Jesus. We want to see teenagers who are learning to follow Christ for themselves. We want to see adults who continue growing deeper in their faith. And we want to see generations learning, growing, serving, and following Jesus together.

Because discipleship isn’t something we graduate from. We never outgrow our need to learn, to grow, and to be sharpened by God’s Word and by one another.

So if you’ve gotten out of the habit of attending Sunday School, maybe it’s time to come back. Come learn.
Come grow. Come be encouraged. Come help disciple the next generation.

It’s never too early to be discipled—and it’s never too late to keep growing.
